So many people try to find the right lawyer for their personal injury lawsuit without meeting or even getting to know the attorney. This is a mistake. Finding the right attorney for your lawsuit is about more than just finding someone with the skills to handle your case. Your attorney needs to be able to empathize with you and represent your best interests. That means you need to know your attorney and Stevenson & Murray recognizes that need.
We want you to get to know and trust the attorneys at our law firm, so we have put together a series of interviews to help. This month we talked to plaintiffs’ rights and litigation attorney Jeremy Newell:
Hello Jeremy! It’s a pleasure to get to speak with you today. We are continuing our attorney interview series so future personal injury clients can get to know you. Can you tell us what is the most important thing you do at Stevenson & Murray?
A: The most important part of my job involves advising clients about the strengths and weaknesses of their case. I do this so that the client can make an informed decision about the outcome of their case whether to settle the case, if possible, or proceed to trial.
This sounds like a very important aspect of what you do at the firm. What makes you so passionate about helping people with their legal problems?
A: Many people have no idea about the way the legal system works. I became a lawyer to help the disadvantaged, so that they can stand up for his or her rights against corporations and insurance companies that seek to deprive everyday people, and their families, of their dignity and self-respect.
So, helping clients is a paramount goal for how you practice law, you must have a few recognitions for your hard word defending people’s right. Have you gotten any awards for your work?
A: Awards include becoming Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, membership in the American Board of Trial Advocates, and being voted as a Texas Super Lawyer.
What is it your favorite part of being an attorney?
A: My favorite part of being a lawyer involves learning about people. Every time I meet a new client or a client’s family member, take a deposition, or try a case, I learn more about our community and the people we may not otherwise come to know outside the legal profession.
It’s good to see that helping your clients is your top priority. It must be very fulfilling when you win a lawsuit for a client.
A: Handling cases is rewarding. However, the best cases are the ones that allow me to build a relationship with the client, so that he or she can get their life back after suffering a traumatic experience.
Okay, so what is the most memorable case you’ve worked on over the years?
A: My most memorable case involved the deaths of four young children who died in a mobile home fire. Our work revealed that a defective space heater started the fire. The parties tried the case to a jury, and the jury returned an eight-figure verdict in favor of the family. However, the most memorable fact of the case concerned a document that stated the heater could have been equipped with a switch to turn-off the heater and prevent the fire. The switch cost less than $1.00.
Sometimes the level of negligence in these lawsuits is pretty shocking. Let’s move away from casework and try to get to know you a little better. Are there any charities or organizations that resonate with you?
A: I have a special needs family member. For this reason, my family has participated in and supported Special Olympics for years.
That probably keeps you pretty busy. Are there any other activities you do in your free time?
A: My hobbies include traveling, reading, and learning about the world in which we live. Learning the perspective of other people allows me to understand that we are all connected in one way or another. The most important use of my free time, however, is spending quality time with my family.
